July 1, 2011- The Boone County Pee Wee Football League (BCPWF) selected Shaw Sportexe as the synthetic turf vendor for their new facility on Gridiron Drive in Florence, Kentucky. The league is open to children ages 6 to 14 for youth football, however the organization is looking to outsource the field to local soccer leagues and other groups such as rugby teams.
The 74,000 sq. ft. field will feature an OmniGrass turf system, the same type of field used in the Buffalo Bills practice facility. OmniGrass features a slit film fiber for durability and an all rubber infill system for high safety ratings.
The BCPWF league was formed in 1969 by a group of people looking to give local boys the opportunity to play youth football. Since then, the league has become a legacy for numerous families, many still volunteering their time to help with games and fundraising. Known for its generosity and support, the league has maintained its early principles to support hardship players who cannot afford registration fees. No child is turned down.
In commenting on the league’s efforts, Tom Enright, Shaw Sportexe Divisional Vice President said, “One of the most fulfilling things our company receives is being selected at facilities that provide hope and opportunity for young athletes. Boone Pee Wee is one of those special places. Kids are free to play regardless of their situation. We are honored to be chosen by Boone and commend them on their principles.”
Boone Pee Wee has become a feeder system to local football teams and has seen some players go onto the high school, collegiate and even NFL levels. Shaun Alexander, running back for the Seattle Seahawks, and safety Michael Mitchell for the Oakland Raiders are among some of the successful league alumni.
The league consists of more than 1,500 boys and girls throughout Northern Kentucky each year. Currently, it hosts 18 football teams and 16 cheerleading squads.
Construction of the new field has started and is expected to wrap up in a few weeks.
